Job Description:

You will be working with the University’s Student Support team in Student Services to provide non-medical help (NMH). This role will involve providing practical and mobility support to assist a student with a physical or sensory impairment to navigate around campus. This could include carrying books and equipment, opening doors, supporting students to use the library services and acting as a sighted guide for visually impaired students.

Responsibilities:

  • Support students to navigate around the campus, carry books and study equipment and use the library facilities
  • Use sighted guide techniques to help students find the best routes around campus
  • Accompany a student to locate, scan and carry materials in the library
  • Liaise with the Student Support team to organise and monitor support, providing sufficient notice if your availability changes
  • Maintaining accurate records of support and confirmation of support hours
  • Undertake relevant training, including Safeguarding and Health and Safety
  • Engage with Continued Professional Development in line with the Disabled Students Allowance requirements (5 hours per year)
Candidate and Skills Requirements:
 
Completed stage one (Level 5 and above) at the University of Derby
Excellent interpersonal skills and experience of providing support for disabled people
Knowledge of the University campus
Well organised, reliable, punctual and respectful of professional boundaries
Ability to communicate clearly, professionally and sensitively with all stakeholders
Ability to maintain accurate records and ensure confidentiality as appropriate 
Good IT skills and experience of using the University’s Library systems
A willingness to undertake training relevant to the role
 
Pay Rate: £12.98 per hour
 
Start Date: Support only required for this academic year and in term time.
