Job Description

The Sport & Activity team wish to recruit several experienced and enthusiastic individuals to referee the Team Derby 6-a-side football league matches for the academic year 2025-26

The league takes place weekly on Friday afternoons 4-7pm from the end of September through to mid- May, during term-time (Sept-Dec; Feb-May)

There will also be occasional opportunities to support delivery of other sport programmes including inter-Halls Sport events, one-off competitions, and Get Active Events

Duties

  • To officiate TD football league games (and other events where appropriate).
  • Support with ‘on-the-day’ organisation of team fixtures
  • Ensure participant/attendance registers are completed for all matches.
  • Communicate scores/results to Sport & Activity department (staff lead/sports assistant)
  • Ensure compliance with the respective laws of the game
  • Report any conduct or health and safety issues.

Candidate and Skills Requirements:

Ideally, we are looking for candidates that have:

  • Completed a basic FA referee training qualification*.
  • Experience of refereeing 11 a-side and/or the five or six sided game.
  • A full understanding of the Laws of the Game

*We will consider applications from individuals with demonstrable, relevant experience and may offer the opportunity to undertake the FA Basic Referee course in support. (FA Referee Course date: Sunday 8 October 2025)

Candidates must:

  • Be a current Student at the University of Derby
  •  Be able to work Friday afternoons from 4pm to 7pm)
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Have a ‘can-do’ attitude and be flexible to suit the requirements of the role (e.g. we may on occasion task referees with additional responsibility for coordinating fixtures on the day, in addition to refereeing)
  • Be able to work independently as well as part of a wider team
  • Be confident in problem solving and able to deal with difficult situations.

Other Information:

Student Pay Rate: £12.37per hour

Working Hours: Friday’s 4pm – 7pm, term time only

Length of Contract: w/c 29 September 2025 to 31 May 2026

Start Date:w/c 29 September 2025 - TBC
